When businesses have the opportunity to expand, many new developments in the IT industry can go unnoticed when planning  IT purchases.    Unless some facet of new technology is brought to the planner's attention, IT strategies may not best utilise current technology in achieving business goals.

These pages attempt  to provide an overview of the latest technology and how it can be used to action your IT strategies.

Networking/Internet

Wireless Networking Pros and Cons

Convenience

The latest appearance on the Network scene is Wireless Networking.   Wireless networking gives independence to those devices, for example Laptops and PDA's, that you want to be free to move through the office without regard for the need to "plug in" to a physical access port.    With wireless equipped laptops you can be connected to the network or internet without any need for cabling, allowing you to print, access network file storage, surf the web, collect email and more from anywhere within range of the wireless network.

Save Money

Businesses can save money by using Wireless Networking when planning a new small network, or extending an existing network temporarily.     Wireless networking infrastructure can be relocated easily, especially when the workstations are laptops, saving time in set up and space in storage, and offering more flexibility of workstation location.

When to avoid Wireless Networking

It is not always appropriate to use wireless networking.  For example physical networks are usually faster, more stable, less susceptible to interference, and cheaper than equivalent wireless networks of 10 machines or more.   Sometimes the EMR (electro magnetic radiation) fields present at a site may be too hazardous for wireless networking to be effective.   In such a case the wireless network will be prone to corruption and slowness.
